Jacking points vs jack-stands

This has always been a conundrum for me: I will never get beneath the Saab unless it is jacked-up and supported by adequate stands, but in order to jack the car up on my garage floor, I need to apply lift (via the hydraulic jack) at a point sufficiently far away that I can install the stand at desired height. I have taken to using a section of 2 x 4 atop the jack head and lifting beneath the same (lengthwise) body section upon which the jacking cleats are mounted, but it's never seemed quite right to me.
It was nice to see center (central?) jacking points in the figure zig pasted in a post upstream. Is that the way most of you fellow garage mechanics manage this task?
