Unpleasant gearbox rattle. Posted by camm [Email] (#191) [Profile/Gallery] (more from camm) on Sun, 17 Jun 2012 12:11:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Having an unusual gearbox symptom - unusual in that after searching the archives, I haven't seen it referenced!
When I'm taking off from a stop or decelerating in first gear, I've started getting an unpleasant rattling-ish/grinding-ish noise coming from what sounds like the gearbox area. The same sound momentarily happened the other day while sitting at a light with the clutch depressed. This is a 1992 5 speed box that I did the Townsend reverse gear idler fix on, and appears to be in fine shape otherwise - no metal in the oil when I drained it, minimal pinion whine, and when I had it out of the car a while ago, everything looked OK.
I opened it up in the car this afternoon, both the rear plate (where the pinion is) and the middle side plate (where the reverse gear idler is) and all looks OK. Is it possible that the reverse gear idler fix is somehow causing this? What else should I be looking for, or what could this be?
