I like that style of analysis! I actually replaced the clutch maybe 6 weeks ago - the old one was 98% worn and slipping. The clutch job went off without a hitch, and worked fine after that. The sound that is occurring is coming from the middle section of the gearbox not the input/chains section, and not the final drive. I don't know exactly what a piece of metal floating around and occasionally going between gears sounds like, but this is what I imagine it is. I'm not going to run the car anymore until I pull this out. I have another '92 box I'm rebuilding and I'm going to get the pinion pressed in, set and preloaded this week, and hopefully the rebuilt unit back in shortly. I'm really interested to open this one up and see what's going on with it. I'll post some pics.
So annoying this is happening. This was a $300 beater convertible I was so excited to drive around in this summer. I took care of some body rust, did a quick scuff and spray, and was looking forward to more cruisin' and less wrenchin'. That's what I get for putting in a used gearbox. Oh well.
