The slave cylinder leak will exit a hole in the bottom of the clutch bell housing and appear near the front of the engine on the ground. If the puddle was near the front of the car rather than back by the firewall, you're probably in line for a new slave cylinder.
A master cylinder leak might go inside the car on the firewall, or may not appear at any place that you can see it easily.
It doesn't take much of a leak to keep the clutch from working properly. While you may have recovered clutch function by pumping, don't expect that to last.
