I'm having some issues with my 93 900 TConv that I think *might* be the wastegate actuator, but I wanted to describe what I actually know and see if you experts come to the same conclusion.
There's a vent plug on the intake manifold that has 2 hose connections on it. One of them points forward, the other backwards. The forward hose routes towards the passenger side and down under the distributor - where it ends up is not easy to see.
For a long time, the problem I was having is that this hose would just blow off the manifold nipple and cause the car to idle badly (typically high). I eventually put a clamp on it to secure it and it was doing OK for a while.
Today, however, I was testing the turbo, which has seemed a little unwililng to engage lately, and when I pulled off the gas, I heard a weird sucking sound and then the engine started alternating between racing and idle, making it necessary to hold the brake down really hard to keep it stopped. I put it in neutral and opened the hood to find that the entire manifold vacuum nipple had popped most of the way OUT of the manifold! It took some fiddling to get it back in, and when I did, all was OK. Needless to day I drove home like a grandpa did not engage the turbo at all.
I'm curious if I'm correct that this vacuum setting is to open the wastegate. Even more, what is the mechanism that'd cause such a vacuum pull that the entire thing would be sucked (or blown?) out of its socket in the manifold?
Thanks for any help - I think this is one of the key areas where I'm ignorant, so I look forward to learning just WTH is going on with this thing.
