Noisy valvetrain will be a rapid, relatively light tapping that won't change under load. Bearings will be a slower and heavier knock that will get worse when the engine is loaded down.
Aside from worn or clogged lifters, anything that reduces oil pressure could be the culprit. I don't think the '91 has the external oil delivery tubes of the earlier engines, but if it does that would be a prime suspect since the plastic fittings will fail. Also try changing your oil filter if not done already. For that matter it would not be a bad idea to hook up an oil pressure gauge to check that you're getting good pressure.
If it is a clogged lifter there are a number of additives that you could try in conjunction with fresh oil and filter. Marvel Mystery Oil and Rislone come to mind, I've used them on old domestic iron over the years and they sometimes work. I would probably avoid the "honey" type oil thickener additives like STP. Though if you have one or more lifters that are really worn out, replacement is the only way to fix the problem. (Eeuroparts stocks them.)
