I will guess that the check valve at the fuel pump is returning pressure to atmosphere. By doing that, the fuel rail is empty or less full.
If you can make or have a little jumper wire, follow the Bentley instructions for testing the fuel pump. Basically key off, jump from 27 to 30 in the fuse box. Turn on the key but not a start to crank. Wait say 30 seconds.
Then, with the jumper still connected, turn the key to start.
Do this cold of course, so you can detect a normal number of cranks. If the cranking is still long like the first time when it's cold, you have a different problem than the check valve, but I can guess that is what is happening.
