Hi RS. Feels like very few of us are still wrenching on the C900T (in my case a 1993 vert with 135K zero rust). Hope life change is sorted!
This job was/is a real PITA and made me doubt keeping the car. My 1984 C900T was the first new car I ever bought so hard to give up the legacy! I have a couple of other cars too including a 9-3SS so not the end of the world but a long down time. Just do this as a hobby.
The parts are getting hard - even something simple like a clock spring. I was actually amazed the PS hoses were still avail, so did mine too and the filter - lots of flushing as I did not do the pump. That looked horrible to get at
It looks like there is a Hex shaft below the top UJ in the column to rack shaft that can probably do the 180 too without removing the steering wheel. Phoenix really wanted the rack back and obviously steering I want to work properly! I think even though they have an online presence the really only service repair shops as they seemed very confused I was not one.
Phoenix are odd. I ordered a replacement rack online and they just went quiet - even though they claimed to have it in stock, maybe you got it. Eventually I called and they said you have to send the old one in. Took them a couple of weeks of messing around to do it and fix the leak with a sleeve and then got the shaft backwards. The do seem very competent though and clearly bench tested it properly. Zero IT. Not even an RMA number for the return. I am wishing I kept the original rack years ago for them to rebuild. This is now a total of 4 iffy racks over the years from rebuilders only 3 of which went on the car as one was obviously junk. I would use Phoenix again as they sound like they care. I think it must be some kind of loose franchise.
For anyone else doing this. I am pretty sure that with the rack and steering centered the slot in the UJ and bolt cutout in the shaft *must* face the front of the car. With the shaft disconnected you can turn the wheel and feel the clock spring endpoint very gently. There is no way you could do this with the rack connected! I ohm it out for the horn and bag to make sure it did not break - or short in your case!
Hope you get yours off the jackstands.
