This one's my first restoration, that is still ongoing unfortunately after two years. I hope to finish it in a few months, as I'm working on the body and paint at the moment. It's been a full restoration complete with welding in new panels to fix the rust in pretty much all normal rust areas (wheel wells, drive shaft tunnels and such) and tearing it down the frame and starting from scratch. I also zinc plate all of my own hardware, which takes what feels like forever. The only thing I leave to pros is the transmissions (Rob at Scanwest), as I rebuilt the engine and nearly everything else myself at this point. I decided to leave this one (a '92 900S) stock with the Jetronic/EKZ, but my '89 SPG (which is getting a restoration of its own) is getting the T5 from MCS. BTW, I've only heard good things about T5 conversions, so fingers crossed it should be excellent!
I actually began the '89 first, but the '92 cut its way in line by blowing its head gasket in the middle of the '89's resto. I told myself that the '92 only needed to have the engine and trans rebuilt, but then kept finding more issues the more I disassembled. I have a bit of a "perfection problem" which also helped that along.
The control arms are stock on the '92, but I may weld in supports for the '89 as it will have much more power... that and powerflex bushings and Koni shocks... and many more upgrades that I'll reveal later on when "Project Modena" is complete (queue the maniacal laughter).
I can't wait to reassemble and drive the '92 here in a bit, and I hope to see everyone at the next SOC in 2024 and meet everyone and show it off a bit.
The other reason why things are taking so long is that I'm also cataloging (taking pics and simple dimensions) nearly every single removable piece of the '92 - just under 2000 parts and 2900 pics and counting at the moment. This is to help the '89 go back together (cause I was young, naive, and thought "I'll remember how this goes back together"... NOT) and to help other folks as I know trying to decipher the handful of pixels on the diagrams on eSaabparts sucks sometimes. My ultimate goal is to create a video series for the 900 to go from "frame to finished car," so anyone can build a C900 by just watching the video series. I'm what you'd call "a little insane."
Anywho... here's a pic from today's progress. Hopefully will be putting the first coat of primer on "Beckley" in the next coming days.
