I agree a leakdown test is valuable and an often underutilized diagnostic. If you have the engine set up for the leakdown test also do a compression test. It will tell you if your engine is breathing.
From the problem you describe your engine is not getting enough "something". I'm guessing air. A compression test will confirm this.
The CIS testing Jimmy describe will be very useful as well. But not necessarily easy to get the right testing equipment. If your fuel filter is of unknown vintage, replace it. I think a B engine has it under the hood so it's pretty easy.
