This afternoon I finally got around to fixing this problem. I jacked the car up and removed the pump per the manual. The only thing I did differently was to also jack the motor and remove the bracket for the right motor mount that also has the square head bolt for the pump. Without that, I don't know how that pump gets out! I tried for a while but gave up- pull the mount bracket and it comes out easily.
Putting it back as a bit difficult. My '93 Vert has a larger idler bracket and the PS pump bracket goes behind that bracket. That makes it a little tricky. I was able to get it in behind and start the bolt that goes thru the two brackets. Then I made sure it was over the lower pump mount. Then I put in the engine mount bracket last and bolted up the square head one.
And... the pump DOES have three bolts that mount it to its bracket- Paul you are absolutely right! The one bolt left holding mine I had tightened a month or so ago the best I could. It wasn't completely tight and the other two were missing. I found some replacements in my metric bolt box- I don't know the thread/diameter. The only thing I know is that the head is 13mm.
The old fluid didn't look terrible, but it was good to replace it. I used the GM spec fluid that my local parts store had on the shelf. It takes just under a quart.
Feels good to get that done. That was a problem waiting to happen as Paul pointed out.
Thanks for the advice last month.
