I'm pretty sure that the parts you're calling "hubs" are actually the synchromesh sleeves but damaged hubs can have a groove. In 1983 Saab changed the contact angle of the blocker rings and to distinguish the old sleeves from the new ones they made a step on the outside of them. The step has no function other than identification so you can turn them either way. Those sleeves were used until 1991 when the synchromesh forks were redesigned.
The hub is the thick disc that splines onto the mainshaft between the gears. All 1-2 and 3-4 hubs are identical, interchangeable and without orientation for all C900 five speeds.
