My experience has always been that it takes something significant to get the CEL to come on.
On the 8V stalling when cold was usually a lot of oily mess building up in the throttle body.
No power is probably something else though. It might be worth properly checking the fuel pressure at the rail to see if the FPR is doing what it is supposed to. Too much fuel pressure would not be good either, would expect black smoke though.
Probably not timing given the code. MAF another favorite. Been a while since I have looked at it but I thought there was some kind of limp home mode if it went bad.
I suspect the real experts on here will have something pretty specific to look at too.
