Installed the newer style in my '92 900S about a year ago. Had to get a new set after mine did the exact same thing on stage 2 - two torqued, two did not, and I stopped after those. Super lucky I didn't pull the threads right out of the block, as I spun them WAY too many times over trying to torque them down. FEBI asked for them back after they over-stretched so they could do an analysis on them. I think I came to realize that I may have (accidentally) used the Nm spec vs the lb-ft spec when I was reading the Saab Engine Manual and setting my wrench... heh whoops. On the second go, I used the set the correct torque spec, and voila, worked like a charm! Here's the torque sequence I used on Step 15, and the satisfying wrench clicks to boot:
