Are Head Gasket Failures Common?

Hello all. I must admit I have been using this board for a long time, but never really paid attention to matters of head gaskets, I have never had this problem. But now I have found an '88 900s with 117k, water in crankcase, otherwise good shape. The car runs well, but it of course has the erratic idle. So my question is, is this likely just a headgasket or possibly a cracked head? This is a car donated to charity, so I can't speak to the old owner. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Tim
