Head gasket failures are not common per se, but they inevitably happen to every car - it's a matter of when, and not if. Saabs seem to manage a good 150k on average before failure, though some will go a lot further and some a lot less.
Cracking of the head happens on 8v cars with a fair degree of regularity, but I've never seen a cracked head on a 16v car that was even remotely well-maintained. More often, the head on 16v cars will warp causing a coolant leak... Both of my '88 900Ts ended up with warped heads at the 134k mark - literally a couple hundred miles apart. Can't explain that one. In both cases, a new head gasket and a re-planing of the head fixed the problem, and both cars have been fine since (so far as I know, I've since sold both...).
