Not uncommon in a 100k+ car. And not unique to Saabs. Someone once posted that manufacturing tolerances are much closer today than ever, and the use of an alloy head with an iron block creates its own problems.
I don't think the 16V heads are prone to cracking, so it might need just the head gasket job.
