In flooded cells (liquid filled batteries), battery vapor is generally discharged from the battery when charging. It is my contention that this is the contributing factor to right hand side rust development on these cars. It is generally the right hand side of the hood and the right side fender which rust first. coincidence? I think not. A gel cell (actually the optima is AGM, but it is similar) will only discharge gas under tremendous duress. (more than we can subject it to in the Saab). I do not have one in my car yet, but it is something to think about...
