Sounds like your clutch master cylinder has bad seals. Easy rebuild if you buy a kit, but its hard to take in and out of the car.
When the seals go bad, pressure starts to leak around the seals and you lose the ability to "hold" the clutch out. Mine failed abruptly on a hill, and I couldn't get it to go into first without pumping the heck out of the pedal.
