Crazy Cruise Control/Reverse Switch/Electrical ??

Okay, I just purchased a 91 Turbo Convertible - it's automatic. The cruise control is not functioning. Now I know to check all the vacuum tubes, brake pedal switch, etc...
Here's the weird part. When the cruise control switch is in the "ON" position, and I put the car in reverse, when the reverse lights come on, the "Cruise" light on the dash lights up! What does the reverse switch have to do with the cruise control? Does it monitor the position of the gear indicator and only let you engage cruise while in "Drive"? Before I take apart the lower dash to check vacuum/pedal switch, should I be playing with the reverse light switch? BTW, the reverse light switch seems to be out of adjustment, as I can move the gear selector while in reverse and the backup lights/cruise light will go on or off depending where the lever is while in "R".
Any thoughts/comments? I'm doing "repair" day today and would love to figure this out.
Gavin
