My Dad (the engineer) and I used to argue about this all the time. My contention was you need the octane to prevent detonation and increase performance. He contended that if your engine was in proper tune, it already compensates for detonation by retarding the advance (knock sensing ignition).
After he put 287k miles of the hardest, full throttle driving on his '92 supercharged Thunderbird with only using regular unleaded, I have conceded. If you are going for the highest performance possible from your car, you should use the highest octane rating availabele. If you are just getting from point A to point B, you will not harm your car in any way (provided it is in proper tune) by using the lowest grade gasoline.
Here's a question: What manufacturing processes are used to give Super unleaded more octane than regular unleaded? Now, while keeping your answer in mind, does that difference justify the mere 10 cent price difference between the 3 common fuel grades? It would be similar to Saab keeping a fixed price difference between the CSE and the Aero model for all years of production.
Super unleaded is a marketing tool developed by the oil companies to convince people that they are "treating" their car better when they fill up with the higher octane.
