I ran some wires and a vacuum line through the firewall of a '91 9KT and later a '95 Aero to connect some in-dash gauges. Remove the lower-front side covers of the console and drill holes near the shifter rod, double-checking the engine side for anything that might be in the line of fire. In my two examples there were no problems, and you can then use firewall grommets or seal with RTV after running the wires. With my two cars drilling the hole wasn't difficult with a Dewalt cordless drill and there was adequate room to work.
You can also run some small wires through the outside of the shift-rod grommet, but definitely not inside since the rod will be moving frequently causing abrasion. I would build up that area of the new wires with electrical tape, as the grommet butts up against a fairly sharp metal surface on the firewall.
