If you're having trouble with minor seapage causing a coolant odor in the passenger compartment, try this fix before wasting time and money on a new core. Go to an auto parts store and buy one 5.5-oz. bottle (silver) of Bar's Leaks and install it as per the instructions.
You can search this forum for earlier threads on this topic, but in a nutshell many OEM's install BL at their respective factories (GM, Ford, and Daimler-Chrysler, to name three). It will not clog a properly maintained cooling system and will also condition the cooling system, possibly delaying other problems like water-pump seal failure. It was originally formulated to prolong the life of water pump seals, and the anti-leak function was a serendipitous discovery. It is the only stop-leak formula to pass the Big Three's OEM specs that particulates pass through a 24-gauge mesh screen.
I've used it in five Saabs and have had only one cooling-system-related problem, a thermostat failing on my present '95 Aero last year. My '66 Corvette has had BL used for 22 years and has the original water pump, the original thermostat (37 years old) failing only last year.
Renew it every year and every time you change the coolant. It will probably fix your heater core problem permanently if you continue using it.
