My opinion is to get original, hydraulic mounts. Yes, they are more expensive. As to lifetime, I guess they may have a shorter lifetime, but do you expect to still have the car in the 6-8 years before they (may) need replacement again?
Right now, if the lower mounts are truly shot, then there is very little mechanical coupling between the engine and the chassis - so it's actually reasonable that you wouldn't feel a lot of vibration. Once you restore the mechanical connection of engine to chassis, you'll probably find the vibration will increase.
Solid mounts will provide somewhat better shifting, but you may or may not notice it. If you do notice it, it'll be under hard, high power shifting. You won't notice it during 'normal' driving. And the condition and compliance of the upper (torsion) mount has more to do with that.
I find replacing the mounts to be a somewhat unpleasant job. Well worth it for the money saved. I wouldn't want to do it twice.
