Central Locking Problems

Hi,
After spending about half an hour searching the archives on this problem, I gave up and thought I would ask. It seems some other people have had very similar problems. The car is a 1994 9000 Aero.
The central locking system went kaputt with a groan, and then after failed to unlock any of the doors when the key was turned save the driver's door. I replaced the central locking module (under the driver's side dash) and am still getting the same problem. I checked the appropriate fuse and it is fine, even when replaced by another. The really loud groan is coming from behind the fuse box. It seems that the central locking module is activated because there is a noise from it, but then you get the groan from within from the pasenger's side fuse box innards. I know there are some relays under there, but don't know what each one is for or even if it is worth going there.
Everything worked fine until all of the locks stopped working at once. Should I be looking into individual door locks/microswitches, or am I on the right path looking for the relay, especially with such a loud dying noise coming from (what I imagine to be) it? The noise comes when you shut the driver's side door, and also when you open it using the lock.
Thank you all for your help. I have been checking this board on and off for the last 7 years now and have come to really appreciate your collected knowledge.
Ian
