Too bad about the automatic.
My '92 9000Turbo 5-speed has 190,000 km and here's what's been done so far:
rebuilt tranny, clutch, slave and master cyclinder, heater core and SRS electronics (warranty job), TCS solenoid (on the firewall, usual first one to go), all cooling hoses and vacuum/pressure lines, all engine and transmission mounts, water pump (preventive), voltage regulator and brushes (preventive), shifter linkage, timing chain and balance chain, driving sprockets for timing chain and balance chain (the balance shafts driving sprocket is a weak point in some 91 - 92's, improperly hardened), rear swaybar bushings (poly), the climate control sensor, and the exhaust system from catalytic converter back (twice). Having said that, it's running just great! I expect before it hits 400,000 km (my objective) that it might need a head gasket and almost certainly a DI cassette. I guess in the final analysis there are a finite number of predictable failure points in these cars and once they are dealt with what's left is a fairly reliable and fun to drive vehicle. Having said that if you are near Alberta and in the market... get in touch. I'm looking to move over to a Volkswagen Jetta or Passat TDI wagon as I do a lot of highway driving and although I can do all my own vehicle work I don't want to have to, at times. If the '92 you're looking at has been well-maintained and the predictable failure points have been corrected, why not?
