Usually fuel smells in the cabin can be attributed to a fault at the evaporative (charcoal) canister, or the pesky o-ring sealing the fuel pump at the top of the tank. I'm not sure if either would fit your description! But just in case, do you notice the smell getting worse after you fill up?
Fuel smells always make me nervous, have you done a check for leaks in the lines, following the length from the tank to the fuel rail? Make sure there's no dangerous stuff going on.
