Peter,
Having owned a 1996 9000CS, I enjoyed the somewhat firm, yet compliant ride driving in the city or highway. Much better than my 1999 9-3SE convertible stock suspension which was much firmer and less compliant. The CS and CSE I believe use the same suspension. It is only when you get the Aero that the suspension is different and is more performance driven. I am not sure how soft a ride you are looking for but if you are looking for 70s American highway boat cruiser soft, none of the Saabs will give you that. I currently own a 2000 9-5 Aero wagon. Of the three, the 1996 9000CS had the most compliant suspension of the three without feeling floaty. By the way, the CS is the base model of the 9000 line up for that year. Hope this helps.
Ben
