sick of the lousy clarion cass deck in my 1995 CSE, but hearing potential in the speakers and amp i decided on a budget upgrade. So I installed a CD player and used the remaining factory system.
First, to retain the HK amp and speakers, you must purchase a CD deck with 2 sets of preamp outputs (red/white connectors on rear). It must have 2 pair, 1 pair for fronts - 1 pair for rear.
Second, owning my fair share of HK components in my Home, i know HK is very conservative on amp wattage. One of the few honest audio companies when it comes to specs. So HK 6x25 probably = 6x75 for most companies.
Third, I removed front speakers to get the polarity correct.(can't find on board)
THE RESULT: i expected an increase in clarity and overall sound, but i was rewarded by a HUGE increase in sound quality. Clarity, sound level (volume), instrument detail and vocals all improved to the point where a comparison to factory unit is not even close. 'BLEW ME AWAY' factor is in effect.
EQ: On a limited budget, i needed 2 sets of preamps, an AUX input for my Sirius sat. radio and a low price. Well, after much research, i decided on a BOSS CD player (3125R). As a bonus, the preouts are 5 volt which means plenty of clean sound to the amp. and a remote for only $75.00!
INSTALL:
purchase a RCA cable for home audio use. Cut this cable in half. Strip outer lining. The outer wires are Negative (-) the interior cable is Positive (+).The HK amp is powered by line out wires and total 9, two for each speaker and one provides the amp a signal to 'turn on'. This 'power on' wire is Yellow and connects to the CD players 'remote on' wire.
The other wires are as follows:
Solid Red + solid Blue = Front Right speaker (Red is +)
Solid Brown + solid Green = Front Left (Brown is +)
Red w/white + stripe Blue w/white stripe = Right Rear (Red w/white is +)
Brown w/white stripe + Green w/white stripe = Left Rear (Brown w/ white is +)
Take these wires and connect to RCA plugs. So one RCA plug for each speaker (total of four). Then take RCA plugs and connect to rear of CD player. This will bypass internal CD amp and use the HK amp for power. The result is stunning for $75. If you have more cash, replace speakers.
