Then I would get a 50 watt 1156 bulb. I had these for years on my 9000, which fortunately has backup lights on both sides. The difference in light output is HUGE and is very welcome. Now I know what you are thinking - 21 watt stock going to 50w, isn't that going to fry something, the wiring, the connector, the housing, etc?? Well, first off, the extra current is still well within the specifcation of the circuit, so now, you are not going to blow the fuse or melt any wiring. Second, just how long are you using the backup light, anyway?? Like 10 seconds to back out of a parking spot or the garage?? I can't speak to your 9000, but my '87 has a metal bulb socket which is connected to the circuit board. I don't see why they would have changed this for the newer 9000. Although, am I remembering right that the backup light is on the hatch door, rather than in the turn/brake signal clusters on the outside? That may make a difference. But in any case, I still say you aren't going to have the light activated long enough so that extra heat is a problem for anything.

I swapped the 50w bulbs over to my new car, which uses plastic bulb holders (I think), and no trouble there either. You can get them at Competition Limited for a very good price. They even have ones that beep. :) I think JC Whitney sells them also.
