Let's see. Fault codes are so much better now than in 1990. It seems you have a lean code, but backfiring on decel would not be caused by a vacuum leak IMHO. A valve timing problem could not be intermittent so that's out. You have checked or replaced the obvious stuff. Are there any codes in DI/APC? The crank sensor was a pain on the 2 litre as I recall, but they did act up a lot. I had one once that ran poorly after pressure washing the engine. Water traveled along the harness from the engine compartment all the way to the DI/APC module plug under the drivers seat. That was unexpected to say the least. Oh! that reminds me of one that had a spider living in the vent hose for the fuel tank. The tank would actually go into vacuum and contract. This restricted the fuel pump screen and caused a similar concern. I wish I could be more help. I like to see the older cars stay on the road. If I think of anything else I'll post it.
