expensive auto trans lessons learned

Greetings, All,
I'm no SAAB virgin, having driven a dozen of them for the past thirty years. However, my '95 Aero with just over 100kmi was the first auto trans to go out on me. My local indie shop recommended a big SoCal yard as someone to go to for a used unit. With a "lifetime guarantee", it cost $1100 delivered to WA. The installation ran another $1300 and the pump was unacceptably noisy! The indie shop said, "Well, the fluid was really dark, but they said it only had 85kmi. The noise is your problem." The yard, said "ship it back and we'll send you another."
Bottom line, neither the yard nor the shop was willing to EVER guarantee me a decent transmission, but only to keep shipping and swapping at my expense. I sent the noisy tranny back to SoCal at my expense for a refund. After some negotiation, the shop did lower their shop charges to $900. Shipping and labor was $1100 down the drain. The local dealer installed a guaranteed rebuilt tranny for $3000. It is a good thing I really like the car, cause I'll be driving this one forever to recoup the $4100 costs.
Now it is easier to understand why so many really nice 9000s are scrapped for a defunct tranny. They simply aren't cost-effective to repair if one is paying retail for the parts and labor. (Yes, I know all the stories of how you got a tranny just for hauling the car away, swapped it in yourself and it has worked perfectly for 500kmi. See above about retail, cause that is the reality for most owners.)
