Greetings, All,
Thanks for the responses. I've contined to drive Saabs and do all my own routine maintenance of tuneups, brakes, shocks, struts and the like, but a 9000 auto trans R&R is the most major work possible on a 9000. Even experienced techs wrestle with it. I was willing to pay for guarantees and an experienced hand here. That I didn't clarify the fine points is why I put it under expensive lessons learned:
1. I should have clarified with the wrecking yard. "If I pay your premium price for a guaranteed transmission, do you pay shipping both ways if the transmission is not a good one, as promised?" Answer: "No, your risk." I would never have taken the gamble with that.
2. I would have hoped/expected my very experienced and reputable indie shop to call me, "Hey, the transmission fluid out of this one looks really dark - not ever a good sign - do you want us to go ahead with the install or send it back for another one?"
As one poster said, I went ahead with the dealer rebuild because I couldn't buy another car I would like better and in comparable shape for $3k. We've got the '95 Aero, '98CSE and an '05 9-5.
thnx, jack vines
