To prevent a CEL there has to be 2 functioning O2 sensors, one before the cat and one after. The ECU tests the cat and O2 sensors by periodically manipulating the mixture. An improper response from either sensor sets a CEL. A scanner will give more specific codes as to which sensor did not respond properly. As long as there are 2 good O2 sensors, one on either side of a good cat, there should not be a problem with the specific sensor location, unless a sensor is placed too far from the turbo, or to far down stream from the cat. They may not warm up or respond fast enough, especially old sensors. Altering the fuel ratio with ECU changes may affect the sensor - cat response test.
