While you are at it, inspect the main pulley (aka Harmonic Balancer). It is a sandwich of an inner and outer pulley, with a rubber joint in the center. When the joint starts to fail, the outer portion (which carries the belt) can shift inwards or outwards, misaligning the belt. Not only does this stress the belt, it can walk the belt right off the pulley, and bad things happen from there.
Look carefully at the tensioner pulley bracket. Sometimes the upper bolt holding it to the engine block fails; if the bracket is leaning away from the engine, this will cause a belt misalignment. With the belt off, there is no tension, so the bracket might be in place - check that the upper bolt is in place and tight.
One sign of a bad main pulley is a screech on start-up. Inspect the face of the pulley carefully - if you see the rubber portion bulging out, that's a bad sign. The best check is to draw a line across the face of the pulley (chalk works, I use some white paint), and start the car up a few times. If the inner and outer parts shift, the line doesn't line up. Of course, this only works if you've got a belt on the engine. But it's a good indicator - I draw a permanent line on the face of the pulley when I first get a car, as it makes for easy checking later on.
