I've done the re-build; that is to say, I've completely taken it apart and put it back together - it was working at the time. I had to install a Quaife differential, which is the last thing that comes out. While it was all apart, I had the gears cryo treated. Anyway, specialty tools are surprisingly minimal. You'll need a variety of different pullers, a transmission stand helps, but I guess is not strictly necessary. It's certainly time consuming and persnickety, but personally I found it more enjoyable than the trans removal and re-install. There used to be tutorials online, but I don't know how many of them are still around. thesaabsite had one that was only a partial tear down, but still useful. Quasimotors also had one that was a little more complete. Absolutely key is taking pictures during the process, so that you can refer back if you forget where something goes, or the order.
Having said all that, I think if I wasn't doing the differential upgrade, I would just buy a used one and take my chances. But if you've ever had the itch to get the Quaife differential, now would be the time to scratch it.
