fuel pump "on the road repair" might be a bit ... ambitious if you haven't done one on a 9k, the weather is bad [raining, cold, very hot, etc], nighttime, bad part of town, no good shoulder on the roadside ... the list goes on.
I've done three or four over the years. As one of the posts hints at, the failure CAN be 'no-notice'. I've had the groaning/moaning version a couple of times; sound gets louder as the pump weakens, especially noticeable with fuel below 1/2 to 1/4. On the older Saabs [my '80 99] the moaning seemed more pronounced. Idk. Tank placement, sound dynamics of the chassis, insulation in the 9k more extensive ... I've also had one zero notice failure a couple of years ago on the '97 Aero. It was the stock fuel pump at ??180,000 mi? approx. I am pretty hyper about fuel quality [top tier detergency, brand names, etc] and not using any ethanol blends ... idk if that added to it's life. Couldn't hurt.
Anyway. Fumes are the least of my worries. Just leave the garage door open and/or run a fan while you unscrew the big plastic retainer. If you search the archives you'll find plenty of good info. Not a bad idea to have a spare retaining ring , as you might break off a few of the tabs getting the first one loose.
If most of your driving is fairly close to home, and especially if your other car is suitable as a tow vehicle [or you spring for towing coverage], don't worry and enjoy the extra ?? 10,000? 20,000? 60,000? miles before it goes.
