Car is a '93 9k turbo. Some of you know the story... :P
I am getting 130-135 psi across all four cylinders during a dry compression test. I performed a wet test and saw an increase in compression on every cylinder except #2. 1, 3 and 4 went up to about 150 psi but #2 stayed at 135 (I did try to use the same amount of oil for each cylinder during the wet test). The problem is that the car smokes in the morning. Seems that the longer it sits/the colder it is, the more smoke I see. Example, parked the car at midnight, started it at 7:45 am outside temp 40*F, no smoke. Last night I parked at 8 pm, started today at 7:45 am outside temp 25*F, LOTS of smoke... but only for 15-20 seconds then it always goes away. The smoke does look blue to me like oil burning. The car now has a newly rebuilt turbo and supposedly got a valve job on the used head I had to put on it (long story).
My questions are
1: With the compression readings I am getting, is it possible that my piston rings are worn enough to cause the smoke? Again, smoke is only on morning start.
2: What would cause cylinder #2 to stay at 135 on the wet test?
3: Mechanic swears that new valve stem seals were fitted during head job. Don't remember him saying anything about valve guides... I understand these can leak oil as well?
I am using some oil. It has gone down slightly from the line below "MAX" to just above the "N" on "MIN" in 200 miles. Also, I fitted new plugs and ran them for about 100 miles and checked again to find all four looking the same with some black (not really sooty) around the threads at the top and the tips looking white-ish. I am running regular 10-30 oil (fresh change) 91 gas, checked pcv valve seems fine. getting 28 mpg avg and boosts strong. tailpipe looks a bit sooty but no CEL.
