80 volts is kept across the plug electrodes at all times when they're NOT being fired, so that the DI cassette may sense current flow through plasma (in this case, burning gases) in the cylinder.
Sorry, but cam position information is a prerequisite for sequential injection, and it doesn't really matter how it's obtained, be it via an actual position sensor, or through some strange means like directly detecting combustion in the cylinders using ionization detection, like our cars do.
Don't assume that just because a vehicle is port injected and not throttle body injected that it's automatically sequential, as most of the 80's chrysler/GM vehicles you reference that did not have a cam position sensor but yet were multiport injected were batch fire, not sequential.
