The fuel pressure regulator is a small, 1 1/2 inch cylinder that is plugged directly into the fuel rail. A small vacuum hose goes from the top hat on the regulator to the intake manifold.
The first test is for the integrity of the diaphram inside the regulator. Remove the vacuum hose and attach a Mityvac or similar vacuum pump and see if the regulator holds a vacuum.
The next test is a little harder and requires a fuel pressure gauge and a banjo bolt adapter. The banjo bolt adapter screws into incomming fuel line where it attaches to the fuel rail. This is on the end of the fuel rail that is opposite to the fuel pressure regulator. On top of the adapter is a Schrader valve that connects to the fuel pressure gauge. For your car you want to see 3 Bar (45 psi) with the vacuum hose disconnected. If the pressure is over 3 Bar, it will cause more fuel to be squirted into the intake than normal, causing the car to run rich.
