I've actually contemplated the opposite of what you want. To each their own, but it looks entirely plausible in either direction. I'm pretty sure the frame is identical, and getting the necessary parts off the front is a breeze. Less painting, I bet it'll take about 6 hours. Totally worth the results, especially if you already have all the parts.
Stay away from the quarter panels. For anything but a black 9k, I totally agree with you on the lights, and I'm also enraged that only one year included two reverse lamps in the vanity panel. But like Derf said, they're a huge pain. Maybe modify the body to accept <1992 tail lights? Or just keep them...it'd certainly be a unique 9k.
To the same end, I'd probably avoid swapping LH with a t5. Beautiful engine management system with loads of potential, and the array of available sensors is nice, but you'll be in the engine bay for days trying to get that wiring harness together. One exception would be an OBDII ECU, which is totally worth it IMO.
