Rather than trust a split link to run the balance chain, I'd remove it entirely. You can leave everything in place and just get rid of the chain and you'll be just fine.
I pondered doing this myself as well, and did a bunch of research. It seems the only downside is a slightly more 'raw' feeling from the motor - really slight. Like you might not even notice, unless, perhaps, you have solid rubber motor mounts instead of the OEM hydraulic ones. Even then, you might not. On the plus side - it'll be slightly easier to rev the engine up and there will be fewer potential things to break.
