As jjacob mentioned, I think the overflow was just because the t-stat opened up on you. It's possible, though, that the t-stat isn't installed correctly, and is bound up, or not opening at the right time.

Where is your driver's side coolant leak coming from, can you tell? Is it the back side of the head, or is it dribbling out of the drains coming out of the firewall?

If it's coming off the back of the head :

1. Check the t-stat housing. When I put mine back together, I had it ever so slightly cocked, and that prevented getting a good seal. A surprising stream of coolant came out.

2. check the hoses that go into the throttle body, and the hose clamps on the coolant return line behind the head on the D/S.

3. Check that the coolant line for the turbo (which bolts into the D/S of the head with a bayonette bolt) is tight.

4. Check the heater hoses.

5. If the leak is from the front of the engine, check the little tiny rubber hose that goes from the turbo line to the PCV line that runs into the turbo intake tube.

If the coolant is dribbling out the drains from inside the false bulkhead, then check the heater core hose couplers, and perhaps the heater core itself.

Having a few leaks is par for the course if this is your first time doing the job. It's easy to forget to tighten a hose clamp. That's why you test it like you did before you jump in it and head off on a cross-country drive.
