The strut bearing or bushing is up top and requires removing the strut, spring, etc., to R&R. Not fun. But I don't think that's the problem.

Under the condition you describe the strut would be loaded and going on and off the power wouldn't unload it enough to make much noise, unless the bearing/bushing is *really* fried. If you get the noise over potholes or sharp bumps, that would be more likely the strut bearing/bushing. (Have that now on a 9-3. Gotta fix it.)

Look at the sway bar links. if the bushings there are shot you would definitely get a clunk. Get poly ones to replace. While you're at it make sure the sway bar is clamped down tight and that it's bushings are OK. Replace with poly if they are bad. And at 150K, they are. Do the rears too and the car wil feel a lot better!

And your steering rack doesn't move, right?

Next culprit could be the rear bushing on the front control arm--could be badly worn or loose. If you do the control arm bushing be sure to do both sides, and I recommend poly ones. You get a bit more vibration and road noise but the handling is much improved.

DO check the ball joint, especially since you are getting this noise. That'd be a bad failure!

The front mounting point of the control arm is worth a look. They usually don't go, but look anyway. Also, just for grins, make sure the mounting bolts for the strut are not loose (very unlikely).
