It was a "Professional Parts Sweden" universal sensor from a site sponsor, advertised to be suitable for front or rear usage in the 9000. It was about $35.
I actually found the specific Saab 9000 OEM Bosch sensor complete with plug-and-play wiring harness on the auction site for just $58 and free shipping, new in the box. A universal Bosch-brand 4-wire sensor would probably have done the trick just as well but at that price I figured why bother with splicing. (Had I seen that deal in the first place I would never have even bothered with the off-brand sensor!)
As I said, since the universal sensor is basically still new I'll just put it aside for possible future use in the rear sensor position or in a different vehicle that is not so sensitive. (And I know I can certainly make use of the extra thermostat when the time comes.)
This is my first OBD-II car so I just chalk up the extra time, expense, and aggravation to the learning curve. As lessons go this one was not too terribly expensive.
