'97 9k speedo - driven gear removal

On my '97 9k CSE 5 speed manual speedo, the speedometer and odometer quit working, as did the cruise control.
Yesterday I painfully (to reach) removed the speedo transducer, wiring and the hold down screw from the top of the tranny.
However, given the painful access, I was not able to determine the size of the nut that holds the driven gear down into the tranny....I tried the two large sockets I have (24mm and 27mm). 24 was too small and 27 was too large. Tried vice grips too but couldn't get a tight grip.
Does anyone know absolutely for sure what the size of that nut is - this is not the transducer... I'm talking about the nut that secures the driven gear assembly from the top down into the tranny.
Thanks for any help,
Todd inMA
