There is a securing clip that holds the transducer in place that is held in place by a retaining screw or bolt. I think the bolt on my car is a 10mm head or maybe a 12. If you loosen the bolt, the retaining clip pivots away and then the transducer pulls out. It's a little tight - I think it has an "O" ring around it.
I had the speedo die on a '97, and the Saab service manager said the gear that mates with the transducer was made of plastic that wears out. It's a $7 part, but you have to pull the gearbox to replace it. I think if you start the car and have someone spin the transducer, it should move the speedo. If it does, that should indicate that the problem is the mating gear in the gearbox.
I drove for about 8,000 miles this way and just changed the oil after every 10 gas fillups, but the broken gear in the gearbox apparently starts to degrade and clog the oil channels in the gearbox.
Hope this helps,
Ray
