Correct. The VDO kit described that setup as a "floating ground." There is one wire that makes contact to the body of the sender and then there is a separate lead wire that connects the send (the tip of it) to the gauge. The floating ground is needed because the sender is connected to the "T" I had made which was inserted in the middle of the heater core supply hose. Since the hose is rubber and not conductive a ground wire had to be connected to the sender to complete the circuit. I hope that helps.
