Depending on your mechanical ability, it's not that tough of a job. Especially if you have a cherry picker. For that job, I'd spend the money for one and then you'll have it if you ever need it again.
A used transmission shouldn't be that much, especially if you like the car. Given the age these things are getting, parts-yard parts should be coming down in price. If you can get a used tranny for $400, $150 for a cherry picker, you're back in business. You won't be able to replace the car for that kind of money, and if you like it, it'll be worth it.
The one thing I would add is don't replace the slave cylinder unless you need to. Too many people on here replace it because they have the transmission out and then the new part fails after 10-15K miles. OEM on that part is better than a new part (my humble opinion).
When I pulled my manual trans to replace the shifter input seal, I didn't replace anything except the seal. My rear wasn't leaking, and the old saying, leave well enough alone was ringing in my ear.
