Post-winter rust and corrosion, miscellany (long) Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Fri, 25 Apr 2014 21:53:25 In Reply to: What's up?, No Snaab, Thu, 24 Apr 2014 15:41:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I had one of my rear calipers seize up, presumably from heavy salt exposure during the severe winter. It chewed up the pads and rotor on that side. The caliper was an Autozone "Lifetime Warranty" part which they exchanged with no quibbles.
My left front fender is melting away in a mass of rust bubbles around the wheel arch, so I need to do something about that.
I think I found the source of a clunk I've been getting in the right-hand front suspension, it turns out that one of the rubber bushings for the sway-bar link on that side is gone. I see that Eeuroparts has those bushings for cheap, but getting the complete link kit is not very expensive and it might be easier to just replace the whole thing.
I missed the heated driver's seat this winter. The seat back heater grid is shot and is not feasible to replace, it's just too difficult to get the seat cover off. I had kludged up a resistor pack that let me just run the lower seat cushion grid, but that stopped working after a while as well. (Though I should be able to get it working again, probably yet another break in the grid.)
Can't complain otherwise, the car is still running great overall with over 310,000 miles on the odometer.
One thing to be aware of with the Autozone warranty, they processed it as a return for credit against a replacement caliper. I wound up getting a $5 and change refund in addition to the new part because the price had dropped since my original purchase. Presumably if the price goes up in the future they'll charge the difference for the replacement.
